Welcome!

HERE'S TO READING!!!  Remember~the best way to help your child in Literacy is to have him/her read for 30 minutes every night + WRITE A THREE SENTENCE SUMMARY OF WHAT WAS READ! Your child knows that complete sentences have capital letters, end marks, subject, predicate, and make sense.  From Shurley English, yo I will happily look over the responses if you like.  Simply place them into your child's Agenda each Friday as a ritual to this routine!

WEBS, BUT NOT SPIDERS!!

This part of my web page will be on-going:  I will add child-appropriate web sites as I learn them.  Occasionally you might see a site deleted because it no longer works.  Otherwise, this posting will "build" as your child's literacy does!!

Core Words

Do you still have the Core Words list at home?  If not, please review what it is from this post.  If you need a new copy, simply inform me from your child.  The Core Words list contains all high-frequency words your child should know through Third Grade.  Each Thursday we have a cloze paragraph quiz based on the five Core Words learned that week as well as others already mastered.  Your child and I mark their achievements and note words that still need work--then he/she can mark them on the home list for you to help in the review.  A suggestion is to master five of the words each night.  All of these words will aid in doing any grade level work BETTER in all subjects throughout the year.

Reading in the Classroom

Each day in the classroom we work towards our standards in Literacy Block through paying attention to our rituals and routines.  This includes reviewing the standards and elements during the minilesson as well as individual work during Guided Reading lessons and teacher-student conferences.  Individuals need to use the forty-plus minutes of individual time by updating their daily reading and writing logs; referring to their Sourcebooks for ideas in writing responses; work on the approved reading lessons on the classroom computer; and review previous conference notes in their folders to be ready for the next conference. ALWAYS~re-read!! Following the rituals and routines makes the entire two hour block run smoothly for everyone!

ABC's...Attitude, Behavior, Cooperation

A= ~come to class knowing you will work to the best of your ability in whatever is asked of you!

B=  BEHAVIOR~your body and mind will help you succeed in the classroom when you have both focused on your tasks and actions!

C= COOPERATION~sharing information and Agenda items at home, returning all notes and signatures, and helping when asked will make your day shine bright!
